The 2nd Prayer, for the Church, as in Seasonal Prayers, after Low Sunday.

THE EPISTLE

I Peter 2.1-10

Dearly beloved: Wherefore laying aside all malice, and all guile, and hypocrisies, and envies, and all evil speakings,  As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby:  If so be ye have tasted that the Lord is gracious.  To whom coming, as unto a living stone, disallowed indeed of men, but chosen of God, and precious,  Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ.  Wherefore also it is contained in the scripture, Behold, I lay in Sion a chief corner stone, elect, precious: and he that believeth on him shall not be confounded.  Unto you therefore which believe he is precious: but unto them which be disobedient, the stone which the builders disallowed, the same is made the head of the corner,  And a stone of stumbling, and a rock of offence, even to them which stumble at the word, being disobedient: whereunto also they were appointed.  But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light:  Which in time past were not a people, but are now the people of God: which had not obtained mercy, but now have obtained mercy.

§ From today until the Octave of Pentecost, both in the Office of the Season and in that of the Saints, the Gradual is not said: but in its place are said two versicles with four Alleluias, in the order below: except in Masses of the Rogation Days, and of the Vigil of Pentecost, in which is said one Alleluia, with one versicle: similarly also after any Lesson on Ember Saturday after Pentecost.  At other times up to Septuagesmia, when the Gradual is said, three Alleluias are said after the Gradual, two before the V. and one after the V.: but when the Sequence is said, the Alleluia which should  be said after the V. is said after the Sequence.

ALLELUIA AND SEQUENCE

Priest:  Alleluia,
People: Alleluia.
Priest:  (Psalm 118) This is the day which the Lord hath made:
People: We will rejoice and be glad in it.
All:       Alleluia.
Priest:  (Psalm113) Praise the Lord, ye servants,
People:  O praise the Name of the Lord.

Victimae Paschali

Priest:   Christians to the Paschal Victim offer your thankful praises.
            The Lamb the sheep redeemeth:
People:  Christ by sin undefiled, reconcileth sinners to the Father.
Priest:   Death and life are joined together in that conflict stupendous:
People:  The King of life who died deathless reigneth.
Priest:    Declare to us, Mary, the vision of thy journey:
People:  “I saw the tomb of Christ living: and likewise the glory of the Risen:
Priest:   Bright Angels attesting, the shroud and napkin resting.
People  Yea, Christ my hope is arisen: to Galilee he now goes before you.”
Priest:   Christ indeed from death is risen, so we know most surely:
People:  O King and Conqueror, grant to us mercy.
All:       Amen, Alleluia.

THE GOSPEL

St.  John 20.1--9

AT that time: On the first day of the week cometh Mary Magdalene early, when it was yet dark, unto the sepulchre, and seeth the stone taken away from the sepulchre.  Then she runneth, and cometh to Simon Peter, and to the other disciple, whom Jesus loved, and saith unto them, They have taken away the Lord out of the sepulchre, and we know not where they have laid him.  Peter therefore went forth, and that other disciple, and came to the sepulchre.  So they ran both together: and the other disciple did outrun Peter, and came first to the sepulchre.  And he stooping down, and looking in, saw the linen clothes lying; yet went he not in.  Then cometh Simon Peter following him, and went into the sepulchre, and seeth the linen clothes lie,  And the napkin, that was about his head, not lying with the linen clothes, but wrapped together in a place by itself.  Then went in also that other disciple, which came first to the sepulchre, and he saw, and believed.  For as yet they knew not the scripture, that he must rise again from the dead.

The Creed is said.

OFFERTORY  Psalm 118

Blessed is he that cometh in the Name of the Lord: we have wished you good luck, ye that are of the house of the Lord: God is the Lord, who hath shewed us light, alleluia, alleluia.

POSTCOMMUNION

O Lord, who hast quickened us with the gift of our redemption: we beseech thee that this means of everlasting salvation may avail for our advancement in true faith in thee.  Through.
